Details

Before the events of Ryse, we know nothing about him. One day Marius comes home from training or possibly a sign up. He talks to his father, telling him that he'll be stationed with the Second Legion in Alexandria, who then asks Marius to show him what he has learned. They spar for a while, and Marius triumphs, his father telling what a sad yet proud feeling it is when a ,"son beats his father for the first time."

They head upstairs where his father explains to him the legend of Damocles, who in battle was betrayed by his fellow commanders. When he was killed and descended into the Underworld, Nemesis, the goddess of revenge, was enraged by how the brave warrior left the human world, and allowed to return as a vengeful spirit, covered in black, centurion armor, who tracked down and killed the generals that had wronged him. He tells him that most commanders carry a dagger with Damocles on the scabbard, reminding them to honor and lead their men justly, or risk the 'Black Centurion' coming after  them for their selfish ways. The very dagger his father describes, is handed to Marius.

Right after he's told this story, they are interrupted by Septima's(Marius'smother)scream. They fight their way to the courtyard, where they find Septima and his sister dead in the fountain. They make their way through what seems to be the center of Rome, taking out the barbarians that horde the streets. Also Marius is guided a certain way by a mysterious woman. It's in the fighting that Marius's father is stabbed by one of the Barbarians, pulling out a sword that revealed a snake upon the scabbard. His father's dying words are, "You must save Rome-save it...save it from them." Marius takes the message, identifying the barbarians later as the Britons from the corners of the Roman Empire,

in Britannia. After his father died, Marius soon meets Commander Vitallion of the Fourteenth, saying he fought with his father, and that he was willing to give Marius the blood he wished to be spilt, and right there, Marius is moved to the fourteenth, where he and Vitallion would lay waste to the Britons, and where Marius would hopefully quench his thirst for revenge.

Career in Britannia

Summary

Marius is promoted after leading the taking of the British shoreline. With Vitallion they break a huge barbarian army by capturing King Oswald and Boudicca .

Information takes them up north beyond the wall, where despite a terrible fall after an ambush from the horned men that dwelled there, Marius with the help of a goddess save the remains of the Legion, injured Vitallion, and their goal, Commodus.

However betrayal causes the barbarians to take York, a Roman city. Marius defends escaping soldiers and citizens only to die, but resurrected again by the goddess to save Rome from the true evil doers of his family's demise, Emperor Nero and his evil sons, Basilius and Commodus.

The Capture

The Fourteenth invade Britannia and take back the shoreline, despite the difficulty of the Britons chains blocking off the shore and destroying the ships. While this happens, Marius sees a man in grey robes watching this happen, before disappearing. As Marius was heavily involved in the breaking of the chains and shows leadership in dire situations, he is promoted by Vitallion after battle as Centurion, before they discover from a scout that King Oswald, Cheif of the Britons, is marching on a Roman town called York with a vast rebel army. The scout tells them

General Commudus, who is the Emperor Nero's son, had engaged the enemy with his Sixth Cohort, but their fate was unknown.

The Fourteenth trudge their way onto York, battling waves of barbarian clans as they continued their push. They are not at York, when they discover that King Oswald is trying to unite his army with another, and that York will fall if the barbarians armies do come together. Vitallion tasks Marius into leading a small detachment into the camp where Oswald and his 'warrior daughter rested', and to capture the two, while Vitallion takes the main Roman force to take on the reinforcements; If Marius were to do this, the cheifs would sue for peace for the King and daughter's safe return, and Oswald would have to swear oath to Rome, thus ending the rebellion.

Boudicca meets Marius

Marius pushes through an aqueduct that the rebels are currently occupying, guiding his small detachment while they moved on ground, covering them from ballista fire. When the aqueduct seems secure, he meets Oswald's warrior daughter Boudicca, where the two face for the first time. Boudicca is defeated, but escapes, using her dual blades to slash a rope that let a huge boulder fall upon him, in which he barely dodges in time. Continous fighting collapses most of the wooden constructs of the aqueduct, and with the remains of the aqueduct secured, Marius and his men push forward to a mound, where Oswald is stationed, and after venturing through a cave and taking Boudicca at the edge of his sword, Marius forces Oswald to surrender or he will end "his bloodline", in which he immediately does so.

The Horned King

Marius meets with Vitallion, and the two march into York, where the two discover the pure cruelty that Emperor's elite, the Praetorians, are doing to the people of Britannia, Vitallion personally stating,"the Britons will never commit to peace if this is how we treat them". They reach the entrance of the town, where they're met by Basilius, the other son of the Emperor Nero, dressed in exotic wear considering the dreggy conditions of York, and what seems to be his familiar-looking advisor.

The rude Basilius, does not express thanks in the capture of Oswald and his daughter, saying his brother was still missing, and threatens the life of Boudicca, first telling the Praetorians to flog her, but instead nearly stabbing her, forcing Oswald to tell him that they sold Commodus to the "Horned" King of the Northlands, past Hadrian's Wall, where horned people of the ancient times dwell. With this new informa

tion, Basilius taks Vitallion and Titus to march north, beyond the wall, and into the Northlands to save his brother, which Marius states as "the edge of the world".

Marius is a key hero in this campaign. They journey to Glott's Hop, rumored to be the gateway of Hades, and move out at night, but when Marius scouts acorss a bridge, an ambush is sprung by the horned men, firing fiery boulders at the legion, breaking the bridge. Marius does hold off on his side, but on the other side the men are cut down,

Glott, The Horned King of the Northlands

Vitallion is knocked out of action, and when their leader appears, The Horned King, he sends Vitallion away, disarms Marius, and kicks him off a cliff.

The fall is brutal, yet Marius somehow survives, and the same mysterious woman appears, looking more god-like than before. She encourages Marius to "rise", and disappears in gold petals when he tries to touch her hand, delivering back to him his helmet, sword and shield. He eventually is able to muster what remains of the legion, kill the Horned King, Glott, and save Vitallion and the impatient Commodus before Vitallion is burned in a huge wickerman the horned men use for sacrificing, and Commodus, imprisoned in a cage, who seems far more crueler than his brother.

The Fall of York

A huge group of barbarians are camped outside York to witness their cheif King Oswald swear oath to the Emperor Nero. Oswald swears the oath to Commodus by hugging, after Commodus reveals the peace treaty, a dagger, claiming it as a 'direct extension of his will and the power of Rome'. But Commodus instead Oswald during the embrace several times, killing him, and sparking an uprise, as the huge camp armed themselves and charged the town of York. When Commodus raises his blade, Marius sees the same snake on the scabbard of which was used to kill his father. He realises that it wasn't the Barbarians, but the Emperor himself.

Marius Titus was instructed to hold the walls, but the Southern Gate breaks, and with heavy losses, the Romans are pushed back to the Governor's House. They successfully evacuate most of the Roman inhabitants and the soldiers, but Marius stays behind and holds as many off as he can while Vitallion, the soldiers, and the citizens escape on the other boats out of York. Exhausted, he's knocked off the bridge, and drowns in the waters.

Resurresction

The advisor to Basilius comes over to see what has occurred, and smiles, but the woman once again appears in a golden light, and the advisor slips away. The woman drops the Damocles blade down into the depths where Marius fell. He is resurrected once again when he grabs the blade and rises out the waters. Now, knowing who truly wronged him and his family, drenched in mud, Marius makes the long journey to Rome.

Final Acts as Commander and Avenger

Returning Home

Marius returns to a run down Rome- beggars lined the streets, and deprivation was everywhere. Rome was not as glorious as it once was. Marius makes his way back to family villa, killing Praetorians that infected the streets. He remembers what happened at the villa, discovering his mother's and sister's death, and mourns, before the woman, which by now gives off the identity of a goddess, tells him why his father and his friends and family where murdered; because Leontius, a popular senator, wanted Rome to be restored to the people of Rome, and that the jealous emperor murdered him for that reason, giving his  immature sons the spoils of the empire. She then says it's was up to him to save Rome rephrasing the true meaning of his father's words, "save Rome from them", before disappearing in gold petals once again.

Marius decides to make armor in resemblance of Damocles's, and upon completion, enters a brothel where Basilius is partying, drinking wine and dancing with topless slave-women. Marius comes to him because he needs entrance into the emperor's tournament, which is being held for Commodus's 'heroic' return. When entering and passing through, only one of the women, covered in dry paint, truly notices him. Knowing the story of Damocles, Basilius is scared to see Marius, knowing he had betrayed Marius's legion.  It is only until he says that he's come for the tournament, that Basilius relaxes a little stating,"you gave me quite the...", before changing his sentence and insisting that he does a little trial, as the brothel floor converts into a bloody little arena. He's half way through killing the gladiators and eearning his place, when Basilius notes that his brother may have a contender. He kills more famed gladiators this time, including Iustinius of Batavia, armed with two stone hammers. Basilius is very impressed, and allows him to enter through a door once the arena is lowered

Marius meets Basilius in his quarters, where he's standing next to an excellent bust of his father's head. He says it's his most recent work, stating that it was a gift for him he made himself, and in the games, the eyes would pour the finest white wine from it's eyes. Basilius says it can be replaced with anything. Marius replies, "Anything?", takes out his sword and guts Basilius before he begs not to kill him. As he bleeds out, Marius uses a gold bowl to fill up and replace the white wine with his blood.

He is leaving, when An oracle appears, saying that in the end Damocles will be killed by Marius, Marius killed by Damocles, and that Nero must die by his own sword.

While Marius is distracted by a Spirit God, Nero stabs him from behind. Enraged, Marius grabs Nero and falls off an edge with him. Nero is impaled on the sword that the statue of him is holding, which is how the Oracle's prophecy was said for him to die.  Marius eventually bleeds out and dies.
